The city of Des Moines held a ceremony Thursday morning for the grand opening of the Southeast Connector on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway from Southwest Second Street to Southeast Ninth Street.

The road, which will be called East Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, follows a new bridge across the Des Moines River.

The MLK extension project came with a $38 million price tag, with $28 million from state and federal sources and $10 million from Des Moines taxpayers.

More expansion is on the horizon, with an extension to Southeast 14th Street scheduled to be complete by the end of 2012.
