Extended unemployment benefits reduced
Unemployed Iowans will see a 13-week reduction in extended unemployment compensation, due to an adjustment in benefits triggered by the state’s decreasing unemployment rate, Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) announced this morning. Because Iowa’s three-month average unemployment rate has dipped below 6 percent, a third tier of additional benefits payments under the Extended Unemployment Compensation Act will be eliminated, shortening the maximum compensation period from 47 weeks to 34 weeks after Jan. 14. IWD Director Teresa Wahlert said Iowa’s change in eligibility will affect approximately 4,200 unemployed residents in the first quarter.
