The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) will receive a $3.08 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s State of Good Repair program.

The money will allow DART to replace fare box systems on buses and install smart card capabilities.

Smart cards allow riders to load as much money onto a card as they want.

A DART spokesperson said the new fare boxes will allow DART to improve its tracking of ridership data from individual companies.
