Butamax Advanced Biofuels LLC announced today it has added two Iowa ethanol plants to its consortium of early adopters of its biobutanol alternative fuel technology.

Lincolnway Energy LLC in Nevada and Corn LP in Goldfield will join the early adopters group with Highwater Ethanol LLC, an ethanol producer based in Lamberton, Minn.

Butamax, a joint venture between BP plc and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., was formed to develop and commercialize biobutanol. Fagen Inc., the engineering and construction firm that built the two Iowa facilities, will work with Butamax to retrofit the two plants, which each have the capacity to produce 50 million gallons per year.

Biobutanol is a high-performing biofuel that can be blended at higher concentrations than ethanol without the need for infrastructure changes. At 16 percent volume, the fuel delivers twice the renewable energy content of 10 percent ethanol blends, Butamax said in a release.
