A former Iowa farm boy, he and his wife, Mary Kay, live in Des Moines. Here’s how he gets his information outside the office:

Books: He has started on his second voyage through the 21-book Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian, the age-of-sail adventure books that inspired the movie “Master and Commander.” But most of his reading is serious nonfiction; he recently bought Rick Atkinson’s “The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944” on the first day of its release. And when noted Civil War historian Shelby Foote passed away, “it was kind of like a friend had died,” he said. He also listens to books on tape. “I always have a book going in the car,” he said. “Right now I’m listening to a lecture series on Mozart.”

Internet: He’s been a New York Yankees fan since childhood and visits Yankees.com “almost every day” during the baseball season. Now he has two sons playing baseball at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, so he also visits www.cornellcollege.edu every day during the college baseball season to check the box scores and play-by-play summaries of their games.

Newspapers: Of The New York Times, he says, “It ain’t news, if it’s not here.” He reads it online during the week and has had the Sunday paper delivered to his home since 2003.

TV: Mostly, he prefers The History Channel. But he’s also thinking about switching media providers to get the Yankees package. “I have never purposely watched a minute of ‘reality’ TV,” he said.

Music: His iPod files run the gamut from the Rolling Stones to Nirvana (blame or credit his kids) to the Decemberists (folk rock) to the Red Army Choir. Plus, he said, “I’m a huge Sinatra fan.”

Radio: He’s a National Public Radio listener. “I rarely miss an episode of ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ and after that I listen to ‘Thistle and Shamrock,’ which is Celtic music,” he said. “I’ll have the TV on mute, listen to ‘Thistle and Shamrock’ and read one of these crazy books, all at the same time.”
