Engaged and ready to rock, Tag Grandgeorge and Fiancée Megan Baron are proud owners of Le Jardin, a French cuisine restaurant that will open Wednesday, June 25, in the same exact spot as another restaurant, La Mie.
La Mie, which serves as a bakery during the day, will keep the doors open after lunch for Le Jardin. The new restaurant is separate from La Mie, and will open when the other one closes. “This is a real unique way of doing business,” Grandgeorge said. “I don’t think a lot of companies embrace this approach.”
Grandgeorge and Baron are subleasing the space from La Mie owner Joe Logdson, and have been making alterations to the existing space. La Mie had been a long, narrow dining space until recently, when Grandgeorge demolished an adjoining wall to expand the space for Le Jardin. The new area allows for more seating, a bar, and an open kitchen.
The building space, which had been set up to suit the café atmosphere, has undergone alterations to create an ambience that feels “more like a restaurant,” Grandgeorge said. Small accents such as linens on the tables at night, dimmed lighting, and a new bar will help the space transform from a café to a bistro. “The only components that will stay the same between the two restaurants are the building and tableware,” Baron said.
These alterations weren’t the only adjustments that had to be made before the grand opening, however. Talks with attorneys, obtaining separate insurance policies and city approval of a liquor license were all benchmarks that Grandgeorge and Baron had to reach before they could plan Le Jardin’s grand opening. “You have to have the right temperament and business sensibility to take on something like this,” Grandgeorge said.
Le Jardin will feature made-from-scratch dishes, that offers rustic, yet polished French cuisine. It plans to use locally grown and environmentally friendly ingredients to prepare the full-service menu.
Le Jardin also will feature more than a dozen French wines and a European beer list. Grandgeorge, who has had culinary experience at Chat Noir Café, Varsity Brasserie and Coffeehouse, and the ArtHouse Restaurant and Gallery, will serve as Le Jardin’s executive chef.
“It’s exciting being a first time business owner, very educational, too,” Grandgeorge said. “Hopefully we can maintain a successful business.”
