Describe your basic workout regimen.

The last two years, I have attended an early morning (5:30 a.m.) kickboxing/resistance training class at Goals in Motion Fitness Studio in Urbandale. I mix in running, about three miles, a few days a week and when I travel.

How have you changed that regimen over the years?

For years, I focused just on running. I have done a number of 10K races and half-marathons. Over the last few years, I decided to reduce the pounding on my knees by reducing the running and adding a more full body workout.

Do you set small goals and reward yourself for reaching them? How?

Training for a half-marathon or completing the initial nine-week challenge at Goals in Motion are the only things that qualify as goal setting. I work out to stay fit, reduce stress and help me keep up with my teenage kids! It’s a habit with me.

Do you work out with a partner or a group or alone? Why?

I typically run alone. Although I do run with others while traveling. I ran with Sen. Chuck Grassley in Washington, D.C., on Thursday! The workout class is obviously with a group. We keep each other honest.

What are the keys to your diet?

I work out so I can eat! But, I do try to eat healthful foods when I can.

What advice would you give to someone just starting on a workout program?

Understand that a daily workout makes you a healthier, more productive person and make it a part of your weekly routine.

Any fitness goals you’re working toward?

Just continue to fight off old age.
