Though much of her work as communications manager for Iowa Public Television is done behind the scenes, she is on view during the network’s two annual fund-raisers. She doesn’t stop talking, it seems, or displaying boundless energy and enthusiasm.
She jokes that when the management needed an out-front face for the fund-raisers, they needed someone “who can talk for long periods of time without stopping. That was me.”
Konfrst said she is not a good enough public relations person to fake her enthusiasm for the kind of service provided by public television.
“I say this honestly. If I didn’t love it and believe in it I wouldn’t do it,” she said.
Konfrst has won several awards from the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). She was involved in the development of its educational program “WordWorld.” Viewers also got the opportunity to meet her during more than 70 visits to local libraries and other community meeting places when Iowa Public Television conducted sessions on the switch to digital television in 2008.
“When budgets are tight, staff is small and there’s important work to be done for the public good, Jennifer is not only remarkably capable, but her optimistic outlook and can-do spirit make her a genuine pleasure to work with,” wrote Kelly Chmielewski, director of public brand strategy for PBS.
Konfrst considers her job a public service, but she also finds additional ways to provide that service.
She is president of the Downtown School PTA, a member of the Easter Seals Iowa board, co-leader of Girl Scouts Troop 272 and a Sunday school teacher at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, where she also is president of the nursery school board and a member of the board of the church’s spiritual center.
“I’ve always done better when I’m busy, and I think that helps boost my energy. It does my soul good,” she said.
Konfrst and her husband, Lee, have two children, Ellie and James.
