Banks consider switch to iPhone
JPMorgan Chase & Co. is considering a change that would allow its employees to use iPhones for corporate e-mail, Bloomberg reported.
The shift would present an alternative to the BlackBerry, a Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) device popular with corporate customers, and would be a first for the second-largest U.S. bank.
Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg said JPMorgan is testing the iPhone, which is produced by Apple Inc., as well as devices based on Android software.
“This phenomenon is very new, and we expect it to put increased pressure on RIM’s performance,” said Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd.
UBS AG, Switzerland’s biggest bank, said it is also considering allowing staffers to use iPhones for company messaging. That move comes as more of the bank’s 63,000 employees opt for the iPhone.
In May, Standard Chartered Bank plc said it’s switching from the BlackBerry to the iPhone, and by years end it expects to have distributed 15,000 of the Apple devices.
Though an unnamed source said JP Morgan wouldn’t purchase iPhones for its employees, it would allow them to send and receive corporate e-mail with them.
