MidAmerican Solar, a subsidiary of Des Moines-based MidAmerican Renewables, has acquired two co-located solar projects in California that when completed will form the largest permitted solar photovoltaic power development in the world.

MidAmerican Solar acquired a 100 percent stake in the 579-megawatt Antelope Valley Solar Projects from SunPower Corp., based in San Jose, Calif. The investment by MidAmerican Solar will be in the $2 billion to $2.5 billion range, MidAmerican spokeswoman Ann Thelen said.

The solar projects, located in Kern and Los Angeles counties, will provide renewable energy to Southern California Edison under two long-term power purchase contracts. Construction of the solar project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of this year, with the plants expected to be complete by year-end 2015. 

MidAmerican Solar’s projects also include the 550-megawatt Topaz Solar Farms in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., and a 49 percent ownership interest in the 290-megawatt Agua Caliente solar project in Yuma County, Ariz.
