Fareway Stores Inc. and Alliant Energy officially began the construction of a 1-megawatt solar field in Boone. The solar field will be located in the Boone Industrial Park, adjacent to Fareway’s campus. Fareway said the groundbreaking showcases its commitment to sustainability, marking the continuation of its 85-year tradition of incorporating green practices. Fareway President Garrett S. Piklapp said: “We strive to be good stewards of our resources, from store operations to charitable endeavors. This solar field is a conscious decision to employ technology that enhances energy efficiency, benefiting the environment and our valued customers.” The venture is part of Alliant Energy’s Customer-Hosted Renewables Program, enabling customers with available land to host solar facilities. In exchange, participants receive lease payments for the next two decades, along with renewable energy credits. The initiative aligns with Alliant Energy’s aim of achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
