The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) announced that it recently received a $1,000 grant from Alliant Energy Foundation, a $5,000 grant from General Mills Foundation and a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart Foundation. The funds will pay for more than 9,300 meals from the council’s Emergency Food Pantry Network, which provides eligible families with a free, five-day supply of nutritionally balanced food once each 30 days. In Polk County, as many as one in five children and one in six adults live in homes without enough food, DMARC estimates. Food donations are accepted through the DMARC Red Barrels located in most metro Dahl’s, Fareway and Hy-Vee grocery stores.
