The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau (GDMCVB) has launched a new gift card program in collaboration with Liberty Bank.
It’s the first time the bureau has offered this type of program, said Greg Edwards, president and CEO of the GDMCVB. “It’s always been one of our visions to try to put a program like this together that will benefit our partners,” he said. “We just felt this was probably the most practical way to do it, as a credit-card-type system.”
The gift cards may be purchased in any denomination between $10 and $2,999; a $1 surcharge will be added to each individual card purchase.
“We think it’s going to be very popular, not only for individuals to purchase as gifts for other individuals, but also for companies to come in and buy in quantity to use as incentives for their employees,” Edwards said.
The GDMCVB approached several local banks with the proposal. “Liberty Bank was the only bank that came back with some interest in it,” he said.
The cards are issued by MetaBank through a license with MasterCard International Inc. Recipients can use them anywhere that MasterCard is accepted, but are encouraged to use them to support Greater Des Moines merchants. The cards cannot be cashed in at automated teller machines.
Gift cards can be purchased at the GDMCVB office in Capital Square, 400 Locust St., Suite 265, in downtown Des Moines during regular business hours, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Gift cards may also be purchased anytime online at www.SeeDesMoines.com/giftcard. A list of suggested local attractions, hotels and restaurants is available on the site.
