Historic East Village Inc.’s board of directors is seeking donations to move the building that formerly housed Don’s East Grand Service Station.
The cost to move the Spanish Mission Revival-style building at 203 E. Grand Ave. is estimated to be between $60,000 and $70,000. So far, the board has raised $37,000, with pledges including $15,000 from a State Historical Society of Iowa emergency grant, $10,000 from JSC Properties Inc., which owns the land that the building occupies, and $2,500 from ConocoPhillips.
Historic East Village took ownership of the building after Jim Cownie’s JSC Properties purchased the property in August and determined it was going to demolish the building to construct a parking lot. The deadline to remove the building is March 13.
The board is working with several individuals to find a temporary location for the structure until it can find a permanent location. It is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Meanwhile, Don Roberts moved his gas station to just south of the river after more than 30 years of business at the 203 E. Grand location.
