Iowa chapter director Mark Kresowik, 23, hosted the party at 3839 Merle Hay Road. He says he has seen global warming become a priority issue for Iowa Republicans, Democrats and independents.
The Iowa chapter recently hired two new full-time staffers to oversee the Blue Green Alliance (between the club and the United Steelworkers of America). Iowa’s Sierra Student Coalition plans to raise awareness of global warming with an Aug. 2 march from Ames ending with a rally in Des Moines Aug. 5.
Although the Sierra Club has sued MidAmerican Energy Co. over alleged pollution from its Council Bluffs plant, Kresowik said the Iowa chapter is implementing an innovative strategy of negotiating with rather than battling utility companies in court.
“The Sierra Club found a lot of success with a utility in Springfield, Illinois, and Kansas City Power and Light to reduce the number of coal plants proposed and instead focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy,” Kresowik said.
