Attendees of the Elevating Civility in Local Elections event on Sept. 19 at Drake University will have an opportunity to learn about strategies to enhance civility in communities as they campaign for public office. The American Bar Association’s 2023 Survey of Civic Literacy found that 85% of Americans believe society is less civil than it was a decade ago, and they blame social media and public officials for that decline. Current elected officials and constituents will also have an opportunity to hear from West Des Moines Councilwoman Renee Hardman, Clive Mayor John Edwards and Urbandale Mayor Bob Andeweg. The three panelists will share their experiences and thoughts on campaigning, as well as effectively dealing with increasingly diverse and polarizing issues. More information about the event and registration is available here.
