Building permits issued for 2 new Microsoft data centers in WDM

Twenty building permits were issued for new commercial projects in the Des Moines area in July and August, including two for data centers on Microsoft Inc. campuses in West Des Moines, a review shows.

A permit valued at $358 million was issued for a 245,000-square-foot data center in Microsoft’s Ginger East campus. The center is the second of five planned on the site at 1475 S.E. Maffitt Drive, according to Dennis Patrick, West Des Moines’ chief building official.

A second permit valued at $345 million was issued for a 250,000-square-foot data center in Microsoft’s Osmium complex. The center is the last one planned on the complex at 5855 S.W. Kerry St., according to Patrick.

The Weitz Co. is the general contractor for both Microsoft projects.

Overall, building permits valued at over $766.6 million were issued in July and August for new projects in Polk County and 13 other communities surveyed by the Business Record. Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, 96 new commercial permits were issued in the Des Moines area.

In addition, a permit valued at $22.9 million was issued in August for a 138,875-square-foot addition to building 40 on the John Deere Des Moines Works campus in Ankeny. Ryan Cos. USA is the general contractor of the project.

Also issued was a permit valued at $10.8 million for the interior renovation of office buildings on Wells Fargo’s 160-acre Jordan Creek campus in West Des Moines. The permit is the fourth one issued for the project. In all, building permits valued at $43.2 million have been issued for the remodeling project that is being completed in anticipation of the relocation of a large number of employees to the site.
