A Kwik Star convenience store with fuel pumps is planned in Norwalk on a 3-acre parcel located south of Chatham Avenue and east of Iowa Highway 28.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission in late September approved a site plan for the project.

The project is planned in Norwalk’s Hughes Century Crossing retail district, which is part of the mixed-use development called Norwalk Central. The development is expected to include retail shops, hotels, restaurants, sporting and recreation venues, and public spaces such as trails, parks and an amphitheater.

The Kwik Star project includes a 953-square-foot convenience store with an attached car wash and 10 islands with fuel dispensers.

Also at the September meeting, the commission approved the preliminary plat and site plan for a hotel planned on about 3.5 acres north of the planned extension of Chatham Avenue, east of Highway 28. The Norwalk City Council in August approved a development agreement between the city and Husmann Construction LLC, which is developing the hotel property. In September, both the commission and council approved architectural elevations of the hotel.

Husmann Development, based in Anamosa, plans on building a four-story, 83-room hotel on the site. The Tru Hotel by Hilton will include a swimming pool, lounge and activity space. Also planned are 88 parking spaces.

The City Council is expected to vote on the Kwik Star site plan and the hotel preliminary plat and site plan at its meeting on Thursday.
