The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) announced 60 recipients of its 2023 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) awards. FHLB Des Moines partnered with 43 member financial institutions and local housing organizations to award $46 million in grants to affordable housing projects in 13 states. The grants will benefit over 2,300 families and individuals, according to a press release. In Central Iowa, FHLB Des Moines and member institution Northwest Bank awarded a total of $1,885,235 to three ongoing housing projects. The largest Central Iowa grant went to Project Hope and a Home, sponsored by Shelter Housing Corp., which will receive $900,000 to build 18 units of housing in Ames for families with disabilities. Another $335,000 will be used to rehabilitate owner-occupied homes in Clive. Community Housing Initiatives will receive $650,235 to make the 44 units of the Frank Smith Center in Des Moines accessible and energy efficient. Since the program’s inception in 1990, FHLB Des Moines has given about $735 million in AHP awards to help more than 92,000 families and individuals find safe and affordable housing, according to the press release. “We are also happy to say that in 2023, we gave $25 million in an addition to 10% of our earnings back to our members to invest in their communities and the people they serve,” FHLB President and CEO Kris Williams said in a prepared statement. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of our members and local housing sponsors, we are able to have a direct and positive impact.” The full list of recipients is here.
