Site plans for two new data centers at Microsoft Corp.’s Ginger East campus were approved by the West Des Moines Planning and Zoning Commission this week.

The two 245,000-square-foot structures will be the third and fourth data centers built on the 124-acre campus located at 1475 S.E. Maffitt Lake Road. The campus can hold five data centers.

The city is allowing Microsoft to plant shrubs in landscape islands in the parking lot rather than trees, a departure from standard requirements. A Microsoft representative previously had made the request, citing security concerns. Trees will be planted in buffer areas surrounding the site, according to information provided by commission members.

The site plans were unanimously approved by the commission. The City Council must approve the plans before construction can begin.

The commission also approved a site plan for a 76,800-square-foot multi-tenant warehouse at 3074 S.E. 42nd St. In December, the City Council voted to allow installation of footings, foundation and utilities to begin. WB Realty Co., based in Clive, is developing South Branch Business Park.
