Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, UScellular announce winners of Black History Month art contest

143 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and Culture, Nonprofits and PhilanthropyUScellular has announced the winners of its sixth annual Black History Month Art Contest with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa. Members of Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa were encouraged to create original pieces of artwork that represent influential Black STEM icons. These included historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering and math. The public voted online to select the winning artists based on creativity, interpretation and overall impression. The winning artists from each club were awarded gift cards in the following amounts:
- Romello Santos of Des Moines – $250 for first place Lonnie Johnson portrait
- Khoa Thai of Des Moines – $150 for second place Martin Luther King Jr. artwork
- Jacquline Carrillo of Des Moines – $100 for third place Ruth Ella Moore creation
