Kemin Industries Inc.’s proposal to expand its footprint in Des Moines has gotten larger.

In February, Kemin revealed plans to build a $28 million warehouse at Southeast 23rd and Maury streets, south of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The warehouse’s size, originally planned at 321,500 square feet, will now be 6% larger at 340,500 square feet, information provided to the Des Moines City Council shows.

The new plans consolidate Kemin warehouses at eight other locations into one central site. It will also increase Kemin’s warehouse capacity for current production and support its future manufacturing expansion plans.

Kemin is a global maker of specialty ingredients for humans and animals. Its headquarters is at 1900 Scott Ave.

“We have a few manufacturing projects in the pipeline, and we recognized the need to consolidate our warehouses, get this new one in place to be able to set the stage to really be able to grow our production,” Matt Madison, Kemin’s global construction manager, told the Business Record in February. “We’re out of capacity on our warehousing side now. The more decentralized it gets, the harder it is to control our inventory.”

The council at its meeting today will vote on whether to approve final terms of a financial assistance package that would provide Kemin with up to $2.5 million aid from the city’s tax increment finance program.

The warehouse construction project is expected to begin this spring and be finished by late 2024.
