More than $1.8 million in federal funding has been secured for the Walnut Creek Family YMCA in West Des Moines, according to a news release. The $1,808,000 investment will help fund essential renovations to the entrance and main lobby, relocate the front offices to develop a multipurpose space and expand the YMCA’s youth development programming. The money was secured through the community project funding process, which allows members to designate funding for critical initiatives. It was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024, which was signed into law in March. “The Walnut Creek YMCA stands as a cornerstone of the western Polk County community,” Cameron Nicholson, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, said during a news conference Monday. “With the proposed enhancements to our facilities, we are set to significantly elevate and broaden our services to children, families and seniors.”
