Proctor Lureman, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines’ current vice president of operations, will be the next president and CEO of Broadlawns Medical Center.

The Broadlawns Board of Trustees announced Lureman’s selection Tuesday during its board meeting. His hire follows a five-month, nationwide search and comes after its last permanent CEO, Anthony Coleman, resigned in November.

Lureman’s hire will be effective July 15, according to a news release.

Broadlawns board Chair Dave Miglin said in the release Tuesday that the medical system’s CEO search committee –  comprising physicians, front-line staff, community representatives and board members –  was unanimous in its selection.

“Proctor’s exceptional leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to both the community and Broadlawns were evident throughout the selection process,” Miglin said. “We eagerly anticipate his arrival and hold firm confidence that he will excel as a leader for Broadlawns and the entire Polk County community.”

Lureman has more than 25 years of experience in hospital operations and physician group management, according to the release. In his position as vice president at UnityPoint, he leads a team of more than 200 physicians and advanced practice providers, as well as 1,200 medical professionals.  

He is a Drake University alumnus.

Lureman will take over for Broadlawns interim CEO Dr. Jason Kruse, who was appointed by the board on Nov. 6. He succeeded Coleman after the former CEO reached a settlement agreement with Polk County’s nonprofit safety net hospital that included a capped $800,000 severance.

Coleman is now CEO of the Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Coleman, who was hired by Broadlawns in September 2021, had a $550,000 initial annual salary. The Business Record submitted a request today to Broadlawns for Lureman’s starting salary.

Broadlawns has about 1,200 employees, including 100 physicians. Its campus includes an acute care hospital, primary and specialty care clinics, urgent care and emergency services, lab, radiology, dentistry, crisis services, inpatient, outpatient and community-based mental health care, according to the release.
