The UnityPoint Health-Des Moines John Stoddard Cancer Center’s “It Takes You” campaign has exceeded its $6 million fundraising goal, contributing to a total $18 million investment in its oncology services. The campaign, launched in 2021, was the first in the cancer center’s history and has supported technology and compassionate care initiatives at the Stoddard Cancer Center. Investments in technology began in 2022 with the purchase of a new Halcyon linear accelerator, the first in Iowa. “The new Halcyon machine delivers radiation therapy to cancer patients four times faster than other machines,” Dr. Robert Isaak, radiation oncologist at Stoddard Cancer Center, said in a prepared statement. “The shorter treatment time makes it easier for patients to remain still and will help reduce their pain, discomfort and anxiety.” The campaign has provided funding for other new equipment, including a TrueBeam linear accelerator, a high-dose radiation machine and a next-generation sequencing machine. The new funding has also allowed the cancer center to add a new financial navigator position to help guide patients through financial aspects of their treatment and enhanced integrative oncology services with the expansion of the Charlie Cutler Healing and Wellness program.
