How the Business Record covers national political and civic news
As an apolitical business publication, we feel it is important to address how and why we cover national political and civic news, and share our commitment to helping our readers navigate situations that might not have immediate business effects.
Our organization’s mission is to help businesses do business better, and our newsroom works diligently to take a nonpartisan and balanced approach to reporting on business issues and policies that could affect our business community. We have long held a core belief that we don’t endorse candidates for office and we have historically chosen not to cover the day-to-day news of individual election races.
Many national and local news organizations make it their specialty to provide election and political coverage, and we encourage you to continue consuming many different sources of news in addition to our coverage to remain abreast of unfolding situations.
But while we are a business publication, the reality is that civic engagement, civility and disruptions to democracy affect our workforce and our places of business. While we are apolitical, it does not mean that we shy away from critical issues of vast import to our readers. Our approach is to aggregate well-sourced content from trusted news organizations in the short term to help provide access to balanced context, analysis and reporting as we work to cover local business impacts of situations.
What can you expect from us? Our commitment to you is that we will continue to bring you high-quality coverage of business news and we will cover developing national events through that lens. The events that occur at a national level are of deep civic importance and ultimately affect our economy and business climate. To that end, we will rely on national news to cover disruptions and endeavor to provide insights to help you and your workforce navigate what is happening and the effects on Iowa businesses.
