DMPS, Google Fiber aim to help families through Parent University
Des Moines Public Schools has launched the Parent University initiative to provide technology training for local families. Google Fiber is supporting the program. The skills taught can help caregivers support children’s academic success, according to a news release. Monthly sessions are planned on topics such as navigating curriculum, completing paperwork, connecting with housing and health resources and getting job search support. “The digital gap in our immigrant and refugee community is overwhelming,” DMPS Superintendent Ian Roberts said in a prepared statement. “Thanks to Google Fiber, every family that participates in Parent University will be able to access the tools to support their student’s academic success.” Sessions will be offered throughout the district with an aim at increasing digital literacy and closing gaps, especially for immigrant and refugee communities. The first session is from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the library at Weeks Middle School, 901 E. Park Ave., with a focus on attendance policies and the district’s Infinite Campus system. Staff at each Des Moines school can answer questions about Parent University. Other school districts, including Urbandale and Ames, have similar initiatives.
