The DOT first tried to get sponsorships after a federal rule change a few years ago. Sponsorships initially were sold for eight of the 38 rest stops, bringing in a total of about $55,000. In a second round of selling, “we had none, zero,” said Mitch Dillavou, director of the DOT’s Highway Division.
