Helena Industries, a chemical manufacturing company that has been located in what is now the city of Des Moines Southeast Agribusiness Park since the 1950s, wants to buy 47 acres of land from the city as part of an $11 million expansion that would add 400,000 square feet of buildings. The city-owned property is immediately east of Helena’s operations at 3525 Vandalia Road, according to a staff report to the city’s Urban Design Review Board. Since 2008, Helena has spent about $30 million in improvements to buildings and equipment at the site. The current plans call for construction of a 200,000-square-foot warehouse, followed by another warehouse of the same size, plus additional buildings. The company currently leases some warehouse space off-site and wants to consolidate operations at its Vandalia Road campus.
