Being able to prepare a meal is an important ingredient for living independently. A new online subscription service based in Des Moines — Look, Cook, and Eat. provides interactive and simple step-by-step cooking lessons that make healthy meal preparation fun and easy for people with intellectual disabilities. “Our goal with Look, Cook, and Eat is to take the difficulty out of preparing meals,” said Sue Hoss, the product’s co-creator. Each recipe uses no more than nine ingredients and nine cooking tools. For a $30 annual subscription, members receive access to videos, cooking instructions and the tools to create more than 150 recipes. Each month, members receive a new menu, including three recipes, a new baking recipe, a new cooking technique and a “bonus” recipe. The service can also be an effective option for organizations that wish to offer cooking as a skill-building activity for people with intellectual disabilities.
