Iowa political operative and nonprofit director Brad Anderson has been named state director for AARP, replacing Kent Sovern, who is retiring after seven years in the position. Anderson will supervise a staff of four and a 14-member advisory council. He begins the job representing 370,000 AARP members June 4. Anderson most recently was executive director of Above + Beyond Cancer, an Iowa-based cancer survivorship nonprofit, and worked on public relations assignments that included the rollout of final plans for the Lauridsen Skatepark in downtown Des Moines. He was heavily involved in a campaign that led to voter approval of a state fund for outdoor recreation and natural resources work in 2010. Anderson served on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 and co-founded a polling operation.
