106 wordsAll Latest News, Innovation and EntrepreneurshipAs you may know, Big Companies have built data centers in West Des Moines, Altoona, Council Bluffs, and, soon, in Waukee. Their presence is being used as a way to sell this area as a high-tech center on the prairie. But Microsoft has come up with a new wrinkle that won’t happen here: sinking a data center into the ocean. (Editor’s note for those new to town: Iowa has no oceans, and don’t try to count Rathbun Lake.) The idea is to see if the submerged versions are more energy efficient. The equipment will be under sea off Scotland’s Orkney Islands for five years.
