Serve Credit Union, a Des Moines-based financial cooperative for public safety professionals, recently announced the five recipients of its $5,000 college scholarship program. Every year, Serve partners with the Des Moines Police Burial Association to offer college scholarships to its members and their families. This year, the following recipients each received a $1,000 scholarship: Tarryn Hill, Southeast Polk High School; Gabby Chiodo, Dowling Catholic High School; Owen Ness, 2019 Johnston High School graduate and incoming Iowa State University sophomore; Ronald Kouski, Saydel High School. Additionally, Hope Ung, a Johnston High School graduate and the program’s fifth $1,000 scholarship recipient, received the Larry Judkins Scholarship. The award is given to a child of a Des Moines police officer in memory of Officer Larry Judkins, who lost his battle with Hodgkin’s disease after 28 years of service. The application process required applicants to include their volunteer history, their future plans, the degree they are pursuing or plan to pursue and an essay on how they would prepare for a financial emergency.
