Love a piece of art and history as Hoyt Sherman Place presents For the Love of Art on November 4 at 7:00pm with a special presentation by conservation expert Barry Bauman. The presentation will be immediately followed by a reception in the Art Galleries, where art lovers can adopt a painting to help restore the beautiful collection at Hoyt Sherman Place. On November 4, Barry Bauman will give a special and unique presentation, which is free and open to the public, to the art lovers of the Des Moines area. He will discuss some of the art pieces from Hoyt Sherman Place that have already been restored in addition to many other famous pieces that he has worked on over the years. He will also discuss how to detect fraud in artwork. The presentation will be followed by a reception in the Art Galleries featuring desserts and cocktails for a $20.00 donation. The evening will be hosted by Des Moines celebrity personality Mike Pace. Art lovers will have the opportunity to adopt a piece of artwork to help restore it and be prominently featured with their name on that piece in the Hoyt Sherman Place Art Galleries. All funds donated during For the Love of Art will go toward the restoration of the artwork for patrons to enjoy for many years to come. In 2012, Hoyt Sherman Place embarked on a multi-year restoration project on the 51-piece collection that was acquired by the Des Moines Women’s Club over the past 125 years. The Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation, responsible for the contents/collection of the Art Galleries, evaluated the pieces and recognized their need for restoration. The project, consisting of paintings of various sizes and values, will take several years to complete. The pieces are selected in order of need, with the most fragile pieces being completed first. Once the pieces have been selected for restoration, they are carefully packaged and shipped to Barry Bauman of Bauman Conservation in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Bauman only works with nonprofit organizations and is very highly regarded in the restoration field because of his rich knowledge and expertise in art fraud and restoration. To RSVP to For the Love of Art reception in the Art Galleries, please call 515-244-0507 x204 or email migas@hoytsherman.org. Please RSVP by October 31. Limited seating available.
