A 69-year-old Des Moines Area Community College instructor leads the largest stair climb team this year during the American Lung Association in Iowa's 2017 Fight For Air Climb on April 9. Buzz Hoffman, a criminal justice instructor, coaches more than 100 members of Team DMACC, which is also the largest student-faculty team yet from the community college, said Micki Sandquist, the organization's executive director. The downtown stair climb event has raised more than $1.5 million for lung disease research, education and advocacy over its first 11 years. Team DMACC is on track to raise more than $10,000 and will be one of the campaign's top five fundraisers this year, Sandquist said. It's Hoffman's seventh year leading a team. "Our team encourages living healthy and being physically active, and I'm inspired by how many people have joined the movement," he said. "I'm also continuously surprised at how many people who join our team are affected by lung disease directly or through a family member, which gives us more motivation to participate in this event."
