Although the Business Record has yet to launch a “Sixteen Under 16” award to complement our Forty Under 40, this story about a 15-year-old Roosevelt High School sophomore would direct us to a shoo-in for an inaugural class. As Joey Aguirre writes in Clay & Milk, Fez Zafar has raised more than $70,000 through a nonprofit he started in 2014, Site for Smiles and Smarts. Projects that Zafar has funded have benefited kids as far away as Uganda, Pakistan and Guatemala with medical and education assistance programs, along with helping to feed students locally. He also started his own film production studio to showcase diversity in Des Moines, and has used proceeds from film premieres to help fund his nonprofit.
