The board of the Healthiest State Initiative has named former Gov. Robert Ray and Iowa businessman Bill Knapp as honorary co-chairs of the organization. "The Healthiest State Initiative has enjoyed broad support and enthusiasm from Iowans in every part of the state, but there is more work to do," Chairman Ric Jurgens said in a release. "We are gratified that these two men, both longtime activists in public and civic life, have agreed to become part of the effort." Launched in 2011, the goal of the public-private initiative is to engage communities and individuals to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016, as measured by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Iowa now ranks No. 9 in the nation in that index, up from No. 19 when the initiative began.
