Gray’s Lake Park in Des Moines on Saturday will host the next generation of triathletes who will gather to take on a kid-sized swim, bike and run event as part of the summer RipRoar Youth Triathlon Series. Des Moines entrepreneur TJ Tollakson, 2014 North American champion, is among the volunteers helping to train young athletes, including his 8- and 9-year-old sons. Around 200 kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have registered to compete. The senior division (ages 12-15) begins at 8 a.m., followed by intermediate division (ages 9-11) at 9:30 a.m., and the junior division (ages 6-8) begins at 10:30 a.m. "This is a unique experience for kids that encourages hard work and healthy lifestyles, but also camaraderie," said Michael Zimmerman, founder of RipRoar Events. The June 25 event is the first of five triathlons scheduled in the series. For event information and to register, go to www.riproarevents.com.
