The American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment have selected the Iowa Utilities Board/Office of the Consumer Advocate Office Building, designed by the Des Moines office of architectural firm BNIM, as the recipient of the Top Ten Plus Award. The national award, now its second year, recognizes one project that demonstrates the impact its sustainable design has achieved. The building at 1375 E. Court Ave. incorporates numerous energy-saving design features and active monitoring to maximize building efficiency. After two years of occupancy, the building's annual energy usage per square foot represents an 81.5 percent reduction from the national average usage. At a cost of $226 per square foot, which includes site cost and the photovoltaic panels, the IUB/OCA Building is an efficient and replicable model for other organizations, said Rod Kruse, BNIM's principal in charge.
