Dollar General seeks to buy land on historic battle site

FORT MADISON - Some preservationists plan to oppose plans to build a Dollar General store in Fort Madison near where a battle occurred in the War of 1812. The national chain store wants to buy the property known as the old Sheaffer Pen Co. parking lot. It's been for sale for seven years. The city's planning and zoning commission has approved dividing the lot into two to protect Native American remains, so Dollar General can build on the western half and leave the east side alone.

Future of landmark Barrel Drive-In up in the air

CLEAR LAKE - The stress of trying to keep a Clear Lake landmark operating is evident on Seth Thackery's face. The 34-year-old owner of the Barrel Drive-In on Highway 18 West in Clear Lake is facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs. It's money he doesn't have. So he's considered selling the business. Neighboring Casey's General Stores Inc. has expressed an interest in buying the property, but a sale to Casey's would mean tearing down the drive-in, which opened in 1958.
