State drug policy coordinator Steve Lukan encourages Iowans to participate in one of many community Take Back events on Saturday, Oct. 26, to safely dispose of old or unwanted prescription medicines, including controlled prescription drugs with a potential for abuse. The local drug drop-off events are part of National Prescription Take Back Day, sponsored twice each year by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. During the last Take Back day in April, Iowa residents dropped off a record 3.75 tons of prescription drugs at 110 sites. Most sites will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Iowa Department of Public Safety will also collect unused medicines at its headquarters at 215 E. Seventh St. from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25.
