Two Greater Des Moines organizations have received grants through a State Historical Society of Iowa program.

The groups were among 36 Iowa recipients for more than $616,000 through the Historical Resource Development Program, which awards grants for historic preservation, and museum and documentary collections projects.

The State Historical Society is a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

Greater Des Moines grant recipients are:

  • Children & Families of Iowa received $2,740 to use toward its project to digitize the agency's historic documents back to the late 1880s for "The First 125 Years of Children & Families of Iowa." Children & Families of Iowa plans to house the material at the State Historical Society to be available to the general public for research and information.
  • Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center received $9,724 to use toward its conservation project to safeguard artifacts on display and those stored in its collection. The funds will be used to purchase and install light-blocking hanging shades in the galleries and purchase conservator-approved wardrobes for preserving the museum's collection of military uniforms.
