Des Moines Register: Des Moines now boasts some of the most ambitious city-level sustainability goals in the country, climate advocates and elected officials agree. In a unanimous vote Monday night, the Des Moines City Council passed a resolution that sets a timeline for several milestones in the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources including wind and solar power. The city aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% between 2010 and 2030, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. By 2035, the city hopes to achieve 100%, 24/7 carbon-free electricity — a goal to which no other American city has committed, advocates said in celebrating the vote's outcome.
