Five Iowans have applied to fill the vacancy on the Iowa Supreme Court that will occur when Justice Brent Appel retires on July 13. They are Timothy Gartin, an attorney with Hastings, Gartin & Boettger LLP in Ames; Alan Heavens of Garnavillo, a district judge in the 1st Judicial District; David May of Polk City, an Iowa Court of Appeals judge; William Miller, an attorney with Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Des Moines; and Patrick Tott of Sioux City, a chief district judge in the 3rd Judicial District. The 17-member Iowa Judicial Nominating Commission will meet on June 27 to interview the applicants. After the interviews, the commission will begin deliberating to select three nominees whose names will be forwarded to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.
