It’s not that I don’t appreciate hearing from our fine community leaders, but when actress Gwyneth Paltrow sent me an email the other day, I was perhaps a bit quicker to open it.

What could this be about? Did she want my thoughts on her role in the 2019 “Avengers” movie? Was she coming to town to check out the hip East Village she’s heard so much about? Did she want to star in “Bridges of Madison County II?”

No, she wanted to talk chemicals.

As I wondered how she got my email address, I scanned Paltrow’s boldface warning that “Cosmetics companies are allowed to put nearly any chemical into personal care products sold in the U.S. even known carcinogens! without any safety testing and without disclosing all the chemicals on labels.” It wasn’t Shakespeare, but I paid attention.

I then noticed the email was distributed by the Environmental Working Group. Now I’m fairly sure I wasn’t the only one who got it.
