Three redevelopment projects in Des Moines have gained City Council support for a total of $5 million in state and federal historic tax credits. Under administrative changes to the state historic tax program, the projects need letters of support from local governing bodies as well as a commitment for local development incentives. The Des Moines projects include the renovation of a building that once housed the only carriage manufacturing company in the United States that was owned and operated by a woman, as well as renovations to the Edna Griffin Building, which holds significance in state and national struggles for civil rights, and improvements and an addition to Bryn Mawr Apartments.
