The city of Des Moines is one of 60 partners and affiliates that have joined the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Communities Alliancea collaborative effort among local governments, philanthropies and nonprofit organizations. Des Moines started a sustainability program in 2006. That led to new policies and work to improve the quality of development. "We know that we must do more to ensure our communities enjoy a quality of life even better tomorrow than when we began," said Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie. Some 87 percent of U.S. energy consumption will be in cities by 2030, America's local governments are working to reduce wasted energy and expand renewable energy and sustainable transportation options, the alliance said.
