    As Pat Miller sifted through her old files and prepared them for archiving, the recently retired director of Iowa State University’s Lecture Program happened upon the first letter she sent to author Margaret Atwood, inviting her to speak at the school in 1987. Then she found the letter from 1988. Then 1989.

    For Liz Garst, the business manager of the Garst family businesses and a 2019 Women of Influence honoree, the crossroads of agriculture and conservation are more than a career; they’re a family tradition. Her grandfather, agricultural innovator Roswell Garst, famously hosted Nikita Khrushchev at their family farm during the Soviet statesman’s 1959 tour of Iowa. Garst says the importance of the field was impressed upon her from a young age.

    For Georgia Van Gundy, collaboration is the key to achieving significant progress. 

    “I work with all viewpoints. I like problem-solving, and I work hard,” Van Gundy said. 

    With a resume that includes working with diverse businesses across the state and a slate of nonprofits ranging from United Way to the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, it makes sense that Van Gundy would say that her focus is on “initiatives to make Des Moines an even better place to live, work and raise a family. I want to use my talents to make the community better. I’ve been doing that for 20 years.”

  • 2019 Women of Influence Honoree: Loree Miles

    Loree Miles doesn’t like thinking of herself as retired. Rather, she says, “I don’t actively have an income.” Miles’ working career spans from the early 1980s through 2018 and has been punctuated with numerous volunteer activities including becoming involved with Anawim Housing and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, and serving on the Iowa Department of Transportation Commission and the board of trustees for the Nature Conservancy.


  • 2019 Women of Influence Honoree: Karen Novak Swalwell

    One of the first items Karen Novak Swalwell voted on as a West Des Moines Water Works trustee was whether to spend $4 million for a new water tower planned for the western part of the suburb. At the time, Swalwell was the first – and only – woman on the utility’s board of trustees. It was also just her second meeting as a trustee.

    Deidre DeJear grew up around small businesses. Her father was a car salesman before opening a home care agency with DeJear’s uncle, and DeJear spent her first job in the human resources department, learning the behind-the-scenes clockwork that makes small businesses tick.

    Connie Ryan’s career has always been motivated by creating change. Ryan, who has been the executive director at Interfaith Alliance of Iowa for the last 17 years, began her career in the Department of Human Services working with adults with disabilities and their families. As she continued, Ryan started to identify the roadblocks at a macro level that were preventing those families from moving forward with desperately needed services.

    When Becky Shaw began her medical training at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in the early 1970s, she was one of just 15 women in a class of 125 medical students. And when she chose obstetrics and gynecology, it was rare for female physicians to practice in that specialty.
