The Iowa insurance commissioner has hired an outside firm to review the reserves of Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, The Des Moines Register reported. Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart said his office has hired a Connecticut-based actuarial firm to review Wellmark's reserves, which are estimated at $1.3 billion. Wellmark will pay the $250,000 cost of the review, the results of which are expected to be available in January.  State Sen. Jack Hatch has questioned whether the Des Moines-based health insurer is holding excessive reserves. An independent review ordered by the division in 2011 found Wellmark's reserves to be adequate.
