Drake University yesterday announced the creation of the R.W. and Mary Nelson Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs. The institute is meant to provide in-depth international learning experiences for students who wish to pursue careers in international public affairs. It will complement the existing Principal Financial Group Center for Global Citizenship. Gerard Gallucci has been named the institute's first diplomat-in-residence, effective Aug. 15. Gallucci is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer and former United Nations peacekeeper. Funding for the institute came from the Nelson family in a gift to the Distinctly Drake campaign.
